Underlever Cocking
Super looks!

As always, quality is what Beeman's valued customers have come to expect from Germany's premiere sport air rifle manufacturer. The HW97's fine ordinance steel action, barrel and cocking lever are hand polished and blued to a standard that exceeds most comparably priced firearms. Likewise for the elegant blue laminate sporter stock, which features a long tapered forend, high comb with raised cheekpiece and a soft rubber recoil pad.

The HW97 is intended to be used with scopes and the receiver is grooved to accept 11mm, one or two piece mounts. Of course, you also get the famous Record adjustable, two-stage trigger with an automatic safety. This is the trigger that has been the industry standard for many years. Field shooters will further delight in the HW-97's smooth cocking, handling and overall feel. It's an underlever sport rifle that carries on the HW tradition of excellence.

Every time I look at the Beeman HW97, a picture of a field target event pops in my mind. Early in my involvement in airgunning, I read many articles and posts about the HW77 and its history in the field target arena. The HW97 is known for pinpoint accuracy and quality fit and finish. And it is an airgun rated among the top spring sporters. The HW97 performs well whether plinking, target shooting or doing some pest control.
Check the results and judge for yourselves.

The HW97 is now available with a blue laminate stock as well as a thumbhole stock

What can you expect from your HW97?
Craig and I hear people claim that the HW97 is just a fixed barrel R9. Let me assure you this is not the case. It simply takes a few shots to put those stories to rest. These guns may share the same spring but the similarity stops there. We did a side by side inspection and tested many HW97's in both .177 and .20 caliber and in both standard stock and the laminate version. We inspected each gun for bluing, wood finish, barrel droop, cleanliness of the barrel, and condition of the exterior screw. This is what we found.

The HW97 had an excellent finish in every gun we inspected. The checkering was clean and the stain consistent throughout the stock The laminate stock is a blue/gray combination and is a very nice upgrade. It is well worth the extra price if you are looking for a unique look.

The HW97's all feel solid right out of the box. We found this air rifle to be consistent from one gun to the next. A quick clean of the barrel and check of the stock screws and off you go. Expect exceptional accuracy and respectable power in this gun. Use to target shoot, plink or control pests.

If fit and finish along with power and accuracy are important give this gun a look. The HW97 is a medium power gun offering looks and accuracy you will be proud to own. To beat the quality of the HW97 you will need to go to a substantially higher price level.

We also were able to check out the HW77 at the same time and found this little carbine to be of the same quality as the HW97's. Both guns are the same length and have the same power and accuracy.

I own the HW97 in .177. I opted for the synthetic model because of consistent balance and durability of the stock. Additionally I live in Arizona where the dry weather takes its toll on beautiful wood stocks.
I purchased this Rifle after trying the Air Arms equivalent as well as the RWS 54. The fit, finish and overall feel off the rifle was perfect for me.
"The proof is in the pudding" I purchased this rifle specifically for competition in bench rest and field target. My last match I scored a total of 635 on three 25m cards of 25 targets each with 8 complete bulls. Windy conditions. I outscored several open and heavy varmint pcp competitors with very expensive setups. If you're a good shooter this air rifle does not get in the way! Buy it and practice and you will win.

Advantages: Trigger, Barrel, Weight, Fit and Finish-
Super Accurate

Disadvantages: big recoil - needs to tune with a vortex kit at the very least to get rid of the twang and crazy recoil. Loves JSB Heavy pellets which are getting much harder to find.
Stephen Ostroski
Mar 18, 2014
Received my rifle about 2 wks. ago. Mounted the scope and out to the back yard. Sighted in at
25 yards. 15 shots sighted in. Trigger weight is perfect right out of the box. Shooting 1/4" - 1/2"
groups at 25 yards. Only about 60 rds. thru the barrel. No complaining about that.

Advantages: You get what you pay for. Made in Germany.
Will not be sorry if you buy this rifle.

Disadvantages: Other than the weight, but you need weight for beech rest shooting, I can not find any so far.

Aug 13, 2013
I was fortunate to be able to buy mine with very few shots through it and at first I was dismayed to observe that things did not work well. Frequently, the safety would not reset to on and you could shoot the rifle without setting the safety off. About 500 pellets through the rifle later and the safety sets every time. The trigger is also smoothing up and I think that the cocking effort is easing just a bit which is good for a 76 year old. I have not been able to test the vaunted accuracy of this rifle because it seemed to be a waste of time. When I think the rifle is a good bit more broken in, say 250 to 500 more pellets through the rifle, then I will get serious about using my StraightShooters pellet sampler to test. For the present I am just shooting Beeman 1239s available locally.

Advantages: For the present the only advantage I see is that this rifle is reputedly very accurate and it costs less than virtually any PCP complete setup. While I cannot comment on accuracy and be fair to all concerned, early observations indicate that this is going to be very accurate as advertised.

Disadvantages: One disadvantage to this, and all springers, is that you cannot use them for cheap firearm training. You can use a PCP or CO2 or pump up rifle for that but not a springer. The reason for that is the extremely light hold that is requisite for a springer. (That's how I got mine, the original purchaser did not know that and he wasn't into benchrest shooting.) So if you come to this, or any springer, from a firearm background (as I have) please be forewarned. Once you have worked that aspect out, you will find an added benefit: the light hold allows greater offhand stability!
Another disadvantage: I purchased this rifle to shoot field target competition. Where I live in Arizona I am at about 600 feet altitude and it's hot here in summer. The Arizona AAFTA club shoots its summer competitions at 7000 feet altitude and all springers shoot very poorly at that altitude. Be aware of that problem if you purchase this or any springer and live at high altitude.
