High Power, Breakbarrel, Spring Rifle

As a result of Cometa's extensive experience in manufacturing airguns and the constant effort to innovate their products, they are able to offer high quality airguns to the discriminating shooter.

All components of the Cometa airguns are manufactured in Spain. The main parts of the airguns - the barrel, stock and tube - are manufactured and controlled by Cometa itself. All the airguns are individually tested to insure quality control.

Cometa has stated that the success of an air rifle is dependant upon the quality of the barrel. For this reason, they rigorously control the whole process of manufacturing, from the selection of the raw materials to the final finishing. Cometa's barrels are precisely drilled and later cold hammered in machines especially made for this process. The hammered process guarantees a mirror finish inside the guns and contributes hardness to the material. Finally, all the guns are meticulously straightened using precision tools. This superb, quality-control process, characterized by the production of its barrels from start to finish make Cometa airguns stand out as a high quality brand.

The Fenix is equipped with a high precision cold hammered for maximum accuracy. And don't overlook the two stage adjustable trigger. The highly adjustable two stage trigger is easily set for your optimum feel. And finally, the hardwood stock is comfortable and nicely finished making the Cometa Fenix a great shooter and great choice for an all-around air rifle.

I just finished testing the Cometa Fenix in .22 caliber. I had no idea what to expect as we had never carried this gun before. And with a price tag of only $294.50, let's just say that my expectations weren't overly high. Normally a sub three hundred dollar price tag would point to an entry level rifle with a terrible trigger and a questionable barrel. Well, I admit that I was totally surprised with the Fenix. The wood stock, although not walnut, was a very nice hardwood that was not only good looking but balanced very well. The cocking effort was at the medium effort level even though I would have thought it would be much harder to cock based on the power level of the rifle. But that wasn't the case. It cocked no harder than an R9 although it had a lot more power. I was very pleasantly surprised. The trigger pull was a bit heavier than a typical higher end gun but it sure wan't anywhere near as stiff as many lower priced guns. I'd guess it to be about a 4-5 lb pull although I didn't measure it.
The recoil and motion of the gun was quite good also. There was very little shimmy or vibration and I didn't notice any twang at all on this rifle. What surprised me was the power level of the Fenix. I was expecting a medium powered rifle in the 14-15 fpe range. What I found was a gun that felt and shot like a medium powered rifle but was putting out 16-20 fpe depending on the pellet being shot. That was a lot more power than I expected to see. In addition, and to my total surprise, the lead-free H&N Baracuda Green pellet at 12.65 grain generated a high fpe and didn't get thrown all over the place as many lead-free pellets do. That was an unexpected surprise. I don't shoot for groups when doing the Our Take tests but I couldn't help but notice how the gun treated various pellets. Very often a gun will not like a pellet and will throw them high, low, left and right...all over the place. This rifle didn't do that. While every pellet hits in a different spot, wherever a pellet hit, the gun put all of them in that spot. That was another surprise although a pleasant one. While that doesn't mean every pellet will group well, at least it didn't throw pellets all over the place which many powerful guns tend to do.

Bottom line on this rifle? The Fenix just struck me as a very good value for the price. It would make a great pest control rifle with sufficient power to handle any small game pest control or hunting application and without breaking the bank. Don't overlook this rifle. It seems far better than the price would indicate. I may just take one home to use myself!
