Low Power, Breakbarrel, Spring Rifle

The Weihrauch HW30S air rifle is, without question, the finest light powered sporting air rifle available anywhere. We guarantee that once you have one in your hands you will agree and won't want to put the air rifle down. At just a shade over 6 pounds, the HW30S is easy to pack around in the field with ease. The gun still packs plenty of punch with velocities reaching 700 fps in the .177 caliber version. The HW30S is extremely accurate and has a very pleasant, smooth firing action. In fact, the HW30S is a favored rifle among the Beeman employees.

The HW30S rifle features a unique double jointed cocking lever which eliminates the customary long slot under the forearm of break-barrel air rifles. This provides a more comfortable grip and a better sling mounting point on the forearm.

Pay attention to the details on this air rifle: Crisp, multi-lever Rekord trigger with full adjustability. Finest non-drying breech and piston seals. Click micrometer rear sight, and scope grooves cut directly into the receiver for added stability. Beautiful precision cast trigger guard. And the satin finish on the hardwood stock resists minor scratches. Simply put, there are few guns made with all the features, style and grace of the HW30S.

Few spring guns can boast of a list of attributes that include gentle recoil, quiet noise level, smooth action and incredible accuracy. Most spring airguns have one or two of those attributes, but seldom all of them. The HW30S accomplishes the same results as the venerable, super popular Beeman R7. But there are a few differences from the Beeman R7.

The HW30S has the same action as the R7 but still utilizes the older beech stock without checkering. The Beeman R7 used that stock for years but now has a beech stock with darker stain and checkering on the neck and forearm. The barrel on the HW30S is also 2" longer than the current Beeman R7.

There is a lot of talk on chat forums about the HW30S being the same gun as the Beeman R7. That is not exactly correct. The HW30S Deluxe has the same stock as the Beeman R7 (with checkering) but still has iron sights which the Beeman R7 does not have and the barrel is 2" longer as mentioned before. The action of the HW30S is the same as the Beeman R7 except for the name on the side of the action.

The HW30S and HW30S Deluxe also do not come with a free 2 piece mount or muzzlebrake as does the Beeman R7 so those would have to be purchased separately. But it is the same great shooter and sports the famous Rekord trigger just like the Beeman R7. So if a buyer is looking to use iron sights, the HW30S or HW30S Deluxe is the answer although a scope and mount can be used with either model as well.

Be sure when comparing pricing to compare apples to apples. Compare the HW30S Deluxe to the Beeman R7 and remember that you'll have to purchase a mount and muzzlebrake with the HW30S Deluxe. Once you get past the pricing aspect and slight differences, the HW30S, HW30S Deluxe and R7 are all super excellent guns to own. Take your pick.

One can shoot this gun all day long without tiring from the recoil, weight or cocking effort. So by all means, look at the velocity results…….then forget them! That's right…forget them! This is a gun that should be shot simply for pure pleasure. And if you're looking for a real challenge, just go out anywhere on the web and try to find a used R7 or HW30S. Good luck…nobody gives up these guns. After all, everyone know a good thing when they see it.

As Straight Shooters' 'Our Take' said, it is just a fun gun to shoot, and isn't that what this is all about? Please also don't totally rule out pest control and small game hunting.

You wouldn't know it to research on the internet these days, but a 6 fpe .177 is perfectly capable of taking squirrels and rabbits, when you can make the head shots. Call it a 25 yard gun.

Power-wise, consider it alongside the CO2 rifles, and it doesn't seem so weak any more. (and you never have to buy CO2 either, or be handicapped when the weather cools down)

Advantages: Good balance, not too heavy, easy to cock, easy to shoot well. Accurate. Great trigger.

Disadvantages: Not enough oomph for body shots on small furry game; kind of spendy for this power class.

As a collector of older spring powered 10m match rifles (FWB and Anschutz), I wanted a lighter rifle with similar action and velocities for back yard target shooting and small pest control. This little break barrel HW30 fills this niche perfectly! My rifle is now scoped and what is very impressive is the high accuracy and repeatability of shot placement. I mention this because of the barrel being seperate from the spring/piston housing onto which the scope is attached. This rifle is so much fun and of very high quality. A supurb value for the price!

Advantages: light weight, rewards proper shooting techniques with excellent accuracy.

Disadvantages: none

The .177 HW30S is one sweet little air rifle. As with all Weihrauchs, it's an impeccable piece of craftsmanship. Ours measures 38.5 inches long and 5.8 pounds (93 ounces on our digital kitchen scale). The length of pull is about 13.5 inches, ideal for youth and small adults. In .177, the noise and recoil are definitely on the low side. The cocking effort is on the higher side of "low" but is much, much easier than that of the HW50S. This also goes along with youth/small adult use, as well as for oldsters with arthritis. The trigger is much better than that of the smaller HW25L and definitely make the HW30S worth choosing. IMO, the power is adequate for squirrels and cottontails out to 20-25 yards with 7.8 to 8.5 grain round nose pellets, and it makes a day at the range much less tiring. IMO, this one and a .22 HW80 are must-haves for the Weihrauch aficionado.

Advantages: Quality, accuracy, ease of use

Disadvantages: 20-25 yard range for small game
