Weihrauch HW77K .20 Carbine Beech

Weihrauch HW77K .177

The venerable HW-77K  "Carbine" is available once again and is still favored by many experienced field sport airgunners for its handy size and quick pointing qualities. The classic HW's action, barrel and cocking lever have all received the usual HW hand polish and bluing. The beech sporter stock also follows traditional HW77 series design, which includes hand-cut checkering on the pistol grip, a high comb with raised cheekpiece and a soft rubber recoil pad.

If someone asked us to name one of the understated rifles of today's .177 airgun market, it would truly have to be the HW77. It was known in it's early years as a wonderfully accurate competition airgun. But since Weirauch brought the HW97 to the marketplace, very little has been written about the HW77. It's partner the HW97 seems to get most of the commentary from writers and chat forum posters. Don't be deceived by the lack of press on this gun. If I were asked to name the top four .177 spring rifle choices for field target competition, this gun would be one of them. Why? Well for starters, it has the same insides as the HW97. Basically only the stock is different. The two rifles are even the same length.

Although this gun shoots at a very respectable 12-14 ft lb. the HW77 has very little recoil and almost no spring vibration. In fact, it is so smooth that shooting great groups is almost ho-hum. It was known as one of the truly accurate field target guns for many years and nothing in it's current version changes that rating.

One of the nicest features is the size of the HW77. Lots of shooters enjoy shooting short carbine sized airguns because they have good balance and are easy to carry around for a full day of plinking or target shooting. The usual issue with carbines is they are typically breakbarrel rifles. And a breakbarrel with a shorter length means the rifle will require a harder cocking effort. That is simply not the case with the HW77. The smooth underlever cocks with an effort of 35 lbs. and actually seems to be much less than that. Couple this rifle with a 4x12 or 5-15 power scope and you have one great combination for both indoor and outdoor shooting.

All in all, this gun is a great shooter with good balance and should get a lot more press than it does. Few shooters could pick up this gun and shoot it without taking it home with them. And we don't make that statement about too many guns.
